CLIMATE CAFE- A REGIONAL VISION FOR A JUST TRANSITION

Science & Technology

The global response required to meet the challenge of mitigating climate change will mean a change in the jobs that people do.

The workforce of North East Scotland, with its link to the oil and gas industry but with access to vast renewable energy, will be uniquely impacted. There is a very real risk that mistakes of previous decades will be repeated. We need a regional strategy that is designed to ensure communities are included and protected, inequalities are reduced not increased, and where quality jobs are created.

The Scottish Government is working via the Just Transition Commission, and the creation of 22 regional hubs like the North East Scotland Climate Action Network Hub (NESCAN) to help deliver the transition. But it is giving most of its budget to transition to the oil and gas industry. This café, organised in partnership between Aberdeen Climate Action, NESCAN and the Aberdeen Trades Union Council will discuss issues around what a Just Transition is, what work is being done locally to enact it, how it might be assessed and what more needs to be done to make it truly effective and just.
There will be three 15-minute talks followed by a Q&A where the audience can ask questions.

This is a free “open to all event” where everyone is welcome.

The event is hybrid (in-person or online). The confirmation email will include a Zoom link.
